How to Help Your Child Choose the Right Book

Choosing the right book can make or break a child’s interest in reading. If a story is too hard, too long, or not engaging, it might turn a curious reader into a reluctant one. Learning how to help your child choose the right book gives them a sense of independence while guiding them toward stories they will enjoy.

One simple strategy is the “Five-Finger Rule.” Have your child read a page from a potential book and hold up a finger for every word they don’t know. If they hold up more than five fingers, it might be too difficult. This helps ensure the book is just the right level.

It’s also helpful to think about interests. If your child loves animals, magic, or sports, look for books with those themes. Graphic novels and comic-style books can be a great option for visual learners. Kids' book clubs like Owl Post Books often curate age-appropriate and engaging reads based on a child’s age range.

Finally, keep trying. Even if a book doesn’t grab their attention, that doesn’t mean they don’t like reading. It just means they haven’t found the right story yet. With a little help, you can open the door to a lifelong love of reading.
