Helping a child who doesn’t naturally gravitate toward books can feel challenging, but with the right strategies, it’s completely possible to support reluctant readers and help them discover the joy of reading. At Owl Post Books, we believe every child is a reader—they just need the right stories, encouragement, and environment to help them bloom.
One of the best ways to support reluctant readers is to offer books that are fun and accessible. Many children feel overwhelmed by long paragraphs or small fonts, so look for books with short chapters, large text, and plenty of illustrations. Our monthly book boxes for kids—especially those curated for ages 8–10 and 11–13—often include early chapter books and graphic novels that are perfect for building confidence and interest.
Choice also plays a major role. When kids are allowed to select books based on their hobbies or curiosities—whether it’s animals, mysteries, or magic—they’re far more likely to stay engaged. That’s why our children’s book subscription is designed to be flexible and reader-focused. We include a variety of styles and genres, ensuring there's something to spark every child's interest.
Creating a calm, distraction-free space for reading can also make a big difference. A cozy reading nook for kids, filled with their favorite books and a few comfy cushions, becomes a safe space where reading feels less like a chore and more like a reward. Adding interactive elements—like crafts that tie into book themes (included in every Owl Post Books box!)—can also help reluctant readers feel more connected to the story.
Finally, celebrate the small wins. Finishing a book, reading aloud for a few minutes, or even showing interest in a story are all milestones worth cheering. Our subscribers often share how their kids went from hesitant readers to eager bookworms after just a few months of receiving our boxes. With the right encouragement and tools, reluctant readers can absolutely thrive.
