Siblings and Storytime: How to Make Reading a Fun Family Activity

Reading together as a family can be one of the most bonding and joyful parts of the day. If you have more than one child at home, involving everyone in storytime might seem tricky. But with a little creativity, siblings and storytime can become the perfect match.

Younger kids often look up to older siblings, so letting the older child choose the book or read it aloud can boost confidence and make everyone feel included. For toddlers, invite them to hold the book, turn the pages, or point to pictures while their big sibling reads. It’s a simple way to build connections and encourage early literacy.

Our monthly book boxes for kids are designed to work across multiple age ranges. For example, a box with a picture book and a beginner chapter book can be shared between siblings. Add in the themed craft project, and you’ve got a ready-made family reading activity.

Creating a consistent routine helps too. Set aside one time of day when everyone knows it's reading time. Make it special by building a cozy corner or picking a “sibling storytime chair” where they take turns reading to each other.

At Owl Post Books, we love seeing families make reading a shared experience. With carefully curated selections and activities that are fun for a range of ages, we make it easy to keep siblings and storytime connected and full of laughter.
